Post 36 wins two at tourney

MANKATO – The Fairmont American Legion Post 36 baseball team went 2-1 at a tournament on Saturday in Mankato.

Post 36 beat Mound Westonka 6-3 in the opener, before falling 2-1 to Bloomington in the second.

Fairmont then rebounded in the third game to claim the 4-2 win over Dilworth-Glydon-Felton.

Levi Becker pitched six innings, allowing just two runs on three hits, striking out two and walking five to earn the 4-2 in the final game of the tournament.

Spencer Chirpich came in and pitched the final inning in relief, giving up just two hits.

Becker also drove in an RBI with a hit, while catcher Andy Reiter drove in a pair of runs with a single.

Chirpich smacked a double for Fairmont in the win.

DGF hurler Brett Meyers pitched all six innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and striking out two to absorb the loss.

Both Bloomington and Fairmont each generated five hits in their matchup in the second game of the tournament, however Bloomington scored twice to take the 2-1 win.

Becker, Mitch Pfingsten and Christian Petschke each recorded hits for Fairmont.

Chirpich finished 2-for-3 in the game, while throwing seven innings, giving up two runs – one earned – on five hits, striking out four to take the loss.

Noah Ludtke gave up just one run on five hits and struck out five to earn the win.

Becker, Pfingsten and Reiter each produced a hit for Fairmont in their Game 1, 6-3 win over Mound Westonka.

Bailey Koppen drove in an RBI with a single, while Chirpich drove in an RBI and finished with two hits.

Jay Ruen pitched a complete game gem, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one for the win.

Danny Brink threw five innings, striking out one, walking five and giving up two runs on three hits for the no decision.

Adam Kuntz finished the game, pitching two innings and allowing four runs on six hits to take the loss.

Fairmont American Legion Post 36 (5-2) plays host to Mankato National at 7 p.m. today at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

St. Peter 13, Fairmont 2 – The St. Peter VFW baseball team swept Fairmont VFW Post 1222 in a pair of five-inning games on Saturday in St. Peter.

St. Peter scored nine runs in the second inning to down Fairmont 13-2 in Game 1, before holding Fairmont to just one hit in a 9-0 shut out in the second game.

Zach Ramos and Nathan Gillis each had an RBI single for Fairmont in the first game, with Matt Lytle, Ben Able and Clayton Maakestad each chipping in a hit.

Maakestad pitched 1 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs – seven earned – on five hits, striking out one and walking three to take the loss.

Nate Johnson then pitched 1 2/3 innings, giving up four runs – two earned – on four hits, walking two and striking out one in relief.

Gillis pitched the final inning, allowing two runs – none earned – on two hits and walking one.

Lytle pitched four innings in Game 2 for Fairmont, allowing nine runs – five earned – on seven hits, striking out three and walking five to absorb the loss for Post 1222.

Ben Abel pitched the final inning, giving up one hit and striking out two.

Abel also had Fairmont’s lone hit in the loss.

Fairmont VFW Post 1222 (4-6) travels for a 6 p.m. game on Wednesday in Blue Earth.
