Warriors split tourney games

MASON CITY – The bottom of the North Union batting order set the table and drove in a pair of RBIs to help the Warriors squeeze past Kee 4-3 on Sunday in Mason City.

Alex Deitering had a double and was hit by pitch to get on base twice for the Warriors, rounding the bases each time for a run.

Jake Govern, hitting eighth drove in Deitering with a base hit, while Jake Adams, the No. 9 hitter, scored Brandon Kollasch, who walked to get on first.

Cody Runksmeier, who went a team-leading 2-for-3 from the plate, drove in the final Warrior run with a double.

Govern finished 1-for-1 from the plate, while Adams went 1-for-2 in the game.

Garrett Johnson pitched a complete game for the Warriors, allowing three runs – two earned – on 10 hits, striking out five and walking one to earn the win.

Luke Gavin pitched 4 2/3 innings for Kee, giving up two runs – none earned – on three hits, striking out one and walking four to absorb the loss.

Quinn Brennan pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on three hits in relief.

North Union left 12 batters on base, including three in the top of the seventh inning and trailing by two runs, but failed to convert to runs, losing 9-7 to Mason City High School on Saturday.

The Warriors rallied for four runs in the seventh, led by Johnson’s infield single, to try and earn the comeback win.

Deitering raced out an infield hit, and advanced to second on the overthrow, with Johnson taking third. Kollasch was hit by pitch to load the bases, and both Johnson and Deitering scored on Jake Govern’s two-run double to left.

With Kollasch and Govern on third and second, Jake Adams recorded an RBI, grounding into a fielder’s choice to score Kollasch.

Cody Runksmeier then collected an RBI, driving in Govern from third with a single up the middle.

With two more hits, the Warriors had the bases loaded with two outs, but a fly ball to center ended the Warrior comeback two runs short.

Collin Platts pitched four innings for Mason City, allowing five hits and striking out three to earn the win.

Matt Schneider pitched three innings, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, striking out six and walking two to earn the save.

Sawyer Doocy pitched three innings, allowing nine runs on four hits, striking out seven and walking six to take the loss.

Corey Vaske pitched the final three innings, giving up only three hits and striking out two in relief.

Cody Runksmeier finished 3-for-5 from the plate, including a triple and driving in three RBIs.

Colin Runksmeier went 3-for-5 also, with a double and Kollasch finished 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

Adams went 1-for-2 with two runs scored, Johnson finished 1-for-3 with one run scored in the loss.

North Union (17-8) travels for a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader against Corwith-Wesley-Luverne today in Luverne.
