Post 1222 downs St. Clair

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont VFW Post 1222 baseball team scored three runs in the first and four in the second as it cruised by St. Clair 12-5 on Monday at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.

Cole Emler and Tyler Tennyson provided a solid 1-2 punch for the Fairmont offense from the No. 1 and No. 2 spot in the batting order.

Emler, who went 4-for-5 from the plate with two runs scored and an RBI, was followed by Tennyson who finished 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in three RBIs.

“I thought our at-bats tonight were really good,” said Fairmont VFW Post 1222 head coach Don Waletich. “We went into at-bats with an idea of what we wanted to do and we were smart at the plate which was very good.”

Emler started out Fairmont’s 13-hit effort with a single to right in the top of the first.

Tennyson then moved Emler to second with a hit to the left side of the infield.

The duo then executed a double steal and wheeled to third and second base.

Jack Waletich drew a walk to load the bases, before everyone advanced a base and Emler dashed home on a passed ball to score the first run.

Tennyson then tagged up on Ben Abel’s sacrifice fly to second base to give Fairmont the 2-0 lead.

Jack Waletich reached third on a second passed ball, and then scored on Nathan Gillis’ sacrifice fly to centerfield to give Fairmont the 3-0 lead after the first.

Ryan Brooks reached on an error to start the second, before the top of the order went into run production mode for the second time.

Brooks stole second, before Emler’s second hit of the game sent him to third.

Emler then followed suit, stealing to get runners on second and third with one out in the second inning.

Tennyson then delivered a two-run double to left, scoring Brooks and Emler to take the 5-0 lead.

Jack Waletich walked for the second time in the game, before Abel drove in Tennyson with a single to center.

Jack Waletich wheeled to third on a passed ball and then sprinted home on Clayton Maakestad’s fielder’s choice for the 7-0 lead.

While the bats were producing runs, Rodney Engstrom kept St. Clair from starting any scoring rally of its own.

“I thought that our pitchers did a good job. They pitched good enough to get a win for us tonight,” said Don Waletich. “Rodney did a good job of pitching out of some jams in the middle innings, and Zach did a good job of coming in and finishing it for us.”

Engstrom pitched five innings, giving up four runs on six hits, walking three and striking out five to earn the win.

Ramos pitched the final two innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one and walking one in relief.

St. Clair’s Alex Anderson pitched six innings, giving up 13 hits and 12 runs – six earned – while striking out one and walking four to take the loss.

Waletich finished 1-for-2 in the game with a run scored, while Maakestad finished 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Fairmont VFW Post 1222 (3-4) travels to St. James for a 5 p.m. game on Wednesday.
