Warriors rally to twinbill sweep

BANCROFT – The North Union Warriors scored nine runs in the bottom of the sixth inning of Game 2 to sweep the West Bend-Mallard Wolverines in doubleheader baseball action on Monday in Bancroft.

North Union right-hander Sawyer Doocy threw a one-hit complete game to give the Warriors a 9-2 win in the opener, before Corey Vaske sparked North Union’s comeback for the 11-3 win in Game 2.

Vaske pitched the final 1 1/3 innings of relief, getting a groundout to end a bases-loaded Wolverine threat with WBM leading 3-2 in the top of the sixth.

Vaske then bunted for a hit to plate Alex Deitering to even the game.

“Corey really did a good job of coming in for us and pitching in a tight spot and really put the clamps on them,” said North Union head coach Chad Slagle. “Then he came in and after making a big play for us, was able to get a big hit when we needed it.”

Jake Govern then snapped an 0-for-6 hitting streak with a two-run single to center to give the Warriors their first lead of the game.

The Warriors would go on to hit half of the teams game-total 10 hits to score another three runs to earn the 11-3 win.

“The last time we played, we weren’t able to move the runners over. We got guys on and couldn’t score,” said Slagle. “Today we were able to put the ball in play and make them make plays. And we took advantage of what they were giving us in that sixth inning, too. It was a real nice job.”

Deitering walked to start the inning for the Warriors, before wheeling to second on Brandon Kollasch’s bunt single.

After Deitering scored on Vaske’s bunt, then Kollasch, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI, along with Vaske each crossed the plate on Govern’s hard-hit single.

Cody Runksmeier followed Govern with a hit before Garrett Johnson’s single scored Govern from third.

A throwing error on Spencer Ricke’s bunt scored Cody Runksmeier and Johnson to give the Warriors an 8-3 lead.

Ricke would score on Kollasch’s second hit of the rally, and the Warriors’ Detering and Kollasch added the final runs of the offensive effort to take an eight-run lead into the final inning.

Vaske earned the win, allowing one hit and striking out one in his relief effort, while having a 3-for-4 batting day with three RBIs.

Cody Runksmeier started on the mound for the Warriors, pitching 5 2/3 innings and three runs – two earned – on six hits, striking out five in the no decision.

Wolverines’ hurler Jason Zinnel pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing 10 runs – four earned – on six hits, striking out 10 and walking five to absorb the loss.

Doocy, meanwhile, kept the Warriors within striking distance in Game 1 to take the 9-2 victory.

The Warriors, who had nine hits in the game, recorded four in the bottom of the sixth to rally for five runs to cruise to the win.

The Wolverines took the early 2-0 lead, thanks to a Warrior throwing error and Zinnel’s RBI double in the third.

Doocy then locked in, striking out six in the final four innings, and did not allow a hit to let the offense take back the lead.

Logan Hellman was hit by pitch in the third before Doocy earned a free pass to first to put runners on first and second.

Ricke then walked to load the bases, before Johnson scorched a single to plate Hellman and Doocy to take the one-run lead.

Johnson, who finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, crushed a Jordan Buhs delivery deep to center to score Ricke in the sixth inning to give the Warriors a 7-2 lead.

Kollasch, who went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs, scored Johnson and Deitering for the Warriors final runs of the game.

Buhs pitched two innings for the Wolverines, allowing three runs on three hits, striking out two and walking three to take the loss.
