Warriors remain undefeated

ALGONA, Iowa – The Iowa Class 2A, No. 3-ranked North Union Warriors remained undefeated on the season by posting a pair of victories during Saturday’s Algona High School softball tournament in Algona.

Peyton Oleson fired a perfect game as the Warriors coasted to a 12-0, three-inning triumph over Garner-Hayfield in Game 1.

Oleson tossed a no-hit shutout, striking out three in facing the minimum nine batters over three frames inside the pitching circle.

Collete Haag went 2-for-2, including a double, to drive in two runs to pace North Union’s nine-hit attack, while teammate Allie Ingalls also went 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles, two runs scored and one RBI.

Cheyanne Boland hammered a three-run home run during the second inning, while Autumn Boland doubled home a run in the second.

Sara Johnson supplied two RBIs behind one hit and scored a run for the Warriors, while Dena Looft and Sarah Rolling each delivered one hit and one RBI.

Jasmine Clausen scored twice and added an RBI, while pinch runners Emma Engelby, Jessica Govern, Kyarsten Mullen and Alexis Valvick each scored in the opener.

In Game 2, Looft delivered the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning to plate Autumn Boland for a 5-4 victory over Van Meter.

Looft produced two hits on the contest, while Autumn Boland went 3-for-4 and tallied the game-winning run.

Haag blasted a two-run homer in the bottom of the third inning for the Warriors, while Cheyanne Boland and Sara Johnson each contributed a hit and an RBI. Ingalls, Clausen and Taylor Mathine added hits.

Ingalls gave up four runs on 13 hits, struck out five and walked one in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.

North Union (10-0) plays host to Clay Central-Everly in a 5:30 p.m. doubleheader today in Swea City.

VFW Baseball

Sleepy Eye 3-12, Fairmont 2-4 – Sleepy Eye Post 800 swept a VFW doubleheader from Fairmont Post 1222, 3-2 in 11 innings and 12-4, respectively, Saturday at Herb Wolf Field.

Sleepy Eye needed four extra frames to edge Fairmont in the opener, 3-2.

Clayton Maakestad delivered an RBI single to top Post 1222’s five-hit effort, while Cole Emler and Jack Waletich each doubled.

Matt Lytle and Parker Monsen each contributed a hit for Fairmont in Game 1.

Maakestad started on the mound, allowing two runs – zero earned – on five hits in seven innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Tyler Tennyson gave up one earned run on two hits in four frames of relief to receive the loss. Tennyson fanned one and walked one.

Sleepy Eye downed Fairmont in Game 2, 12-4.

Waletich produced three RBIs on three hits, while teammate Evan Kloss also supplied three hits. Michael Hawkins, Kale Fritz and Monsen each chipped in hits.

Emler gave up 12 runs – five earned – on four hits in four innings to take the loss for Post 1222. He walked seven, struck out four and hit two batters.

Nate Johnson hurled three hitless and scoreless innings of relief, striking out four without issuing a walk.

Fairmont (1-2) travels to Lake Crystal on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. game.
