Knights down USC, 1-0
TRUMAN – Jeremy Smith combined a shutdown pitching performance with a timely bat to engineer the Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman Knights’ 1-0 playoff victory over the United South Central Rebels in Section 2A baseball action on Saturday in Truman.
No. 4-seeded Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman (13-5) advances to face Class A No. 6-ranked and No. 1-seeded Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial in a Section 2A, South Sub-Section semifinal game at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Lake Crystal. LCWM gained the next round via a 4-3 quarterfinal victory over No. 8-seeded St. Clair.
Smith hurled a three-hit complete-game shutout to earn the victory. The senior left-hander recorded eight strikeouts, issued three walks and hit one batter in seven innings of work.
Smith also assisted his own cause from the batter’s box, delivering an RBI single to plate teammate Dylan Petrowiak with the postseason clash’s only run during the bottom of the third inning. Petrowiak had reached on a double.
Josh Wolter and Chandler Greier each collected hits for the Knights.
Colin Becher supplied two of USC’s three hits, while teammate Lucas George smacked a leadoff double during the top of the seventh inning.
Rebel starting pitcher David Stenzel allowed one earned run on four hits, struck out six and walked five in six innings of work to take the loss.

Mankato Loyola 5, Martin County West 3 – The No. 2-seeded Crusaders defeated the Mavericks 5-3 in Section 2A playoff baseball action on Saturday in Mankato.
Mankato Loyola (11-3) advances to face the No. 3-seed Waterville-Elysian-Morristown at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Mankato.
The Buccaneers advanced to play the Crusaders after defeating Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton 5-1 on Saturday.
Martin County West finishes its season with a 5-8 record.
