Cardinals win Sibley East title
GAYLORD – The Class AA, No. 4-ranked Fairmont baseball lineup posted a pair of victories to capture top honors at the Sibley East Tournament on Saturday.
The Cardinals’ lumber erupted for 14 hits, while ace right-hander Levi Becker hurled a two-hit complete-game gem to engineer an 8-2 first-round victory over host Sibley East in Gaylord.
Becker allowed two earned runs, issued six walks and hit one batter in seven innings of work to earn the win.
Mitch Pfingsten, Spencer Chirpich, Luke Becker, Ryan Noll and Christian Petschke each produced two hits for Fairmont in the opener. Pfingsten collected two RBIs; Chirpich drove in a run and scored once; Luke Becker doubled, scored three runs and had one RBI; Petschke plated a run, while Noll crossed the plate once.
Levi Becker, Jay Ruen, Bryce Holm and Kyle Guetter each contributed one hit to the winning performance.
Chirpich went 4-for-4 with a pair of doubles, one RBI and one run scored to pace the Cardinals’ 8-3 victory over the Nicollet Raiders in Nicollet.
Pfingsten went 2-for-3, including a two-run home run in the first inning and a two-run single in the second frame, to generate a game-best four RBIs. Pfingsten also scored a run.
Luke Becker, Noll, Trason Arens, Guetter and Jordan Voss each supplied hits for Fairmont in Game 2.
Ruen fired a six-hit gem, allowing three earned runs, while striking out nine and walking two in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory.
Fairmont (16-1, 8-1 South Central) plays host to Maple River at 5 p.m. today at Herb Wolf Field in Fairmont.
