Tigers scratch Cardinals
FAIRMONT – Grant Becker outlasted Trevor Herfindahl in a third-set tiebreaker to give the Fairmont Cardinal tennis team its second meet point in a 5-2 nonconference loss to the Albert Lea Tigers on Thursday at Cardinal Courts.
“We tried to treat this match like a section meet, and some of the kids did well with that and some others didn’t,” said Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson.
Austin Becker and Tyler Head teamed to give Fairmont its first point from No. 3 doubles. The duo defeated Andy Woitas and Tanner Shaft, 6-2, 6-4.
“I thought that Austin and Tyler played a solid match for us in doubles today. We felt there was a good chance to get a win there, and they played well to do that,” said Johnson.
Grant Becker, meanwhile, claimed the first set over Trevor Herfindahl, 6-4.
Herfindahl then came back to edge Becker in a second-set tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6).
Despite dropping the middle set, Becker came back to claim the identical score victory, 7-6 (8-6) to win the match.
“I thought that Grant did a great job in his match. There was good play by both players and little adjustments were being made through the whole match, but he stuck with it,” said Johnson.
The Tigers then rattled off a streak of five wins to clinch the meet victory.
Albert Lea’s Taylor Herfindahl downed Ryan Busche, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, while Darik Weigel beat Mitch Anderton, 6-1, 6-0 at third singles. The Tigers’ Shafer Overgaard downed Jake Kallenbach, 6-1, 6-0 at fourth singles.
Kyle Zogg and Carter Dahl teamed to hand J.T. Viesselman and Andrew Johnson a 6-2, 6-1 loss at No. 1 doubles, and Josh Martin and Collin Jahnke defeated Sterlin Johnson and Carter Klanderud, 6-3, 6-4, at second doubles.
“The first doubles team was disappointed with their match today. We’ve got some work to do before sections for them,” said Eric Johnson. “Carter and Sterlin though played well. And for Carter, being a seventh-grader and handling everything that we throw at him with a good attitude every day is so great to see, despite how their match went.”
Fairmont (2-11) plays in the South Central Conference Meet at 9 a.m. Saturday in Waseca.
