Food shelf marks 1 year
To the Editor:
On behalf of the Heaven’s Table Food Shelf board of directors, I would like to thank the Martin County community for its outstanding support of the food shelf during our first year.
On May 15, we will celebrate our one-year anniversary of serving the hungry in Martin County.
During this first year, we served the following:
o 2012:?1,157 individuals, 365 households, 36,287 pounds of food.
o 2013: 916 individuals, 310 households, 32,703 pounds of food.
Ages served (includes multiple visits): Ages 1-6: 547; ages 7-17: 955; ages 18-64: 2,461; ages 65 +: 267.
As you can see, the need in our community is great. HTFS has evolved into a vibrant food shelf that can efficiently supply food to the needy in our area.
HTFS is seeing the number of people served increase in 2013.
The number of people aged 65+ is low for our area. If you know of a senior needing assistance, have them contact the food shelf.
HTFS partners with Second Harvest Heartland to purchase food at a lower cost for our clients. Second Harvest also provides advice and leadership for food shelf operations.
I would also like to thank the Fairmont Kwik Trip and US Foods, formally Hawkeye Foods, for allowing us to do food rescue and to enable us to pass that food along to our clients.
It takes many people to have the food shelf operate fully. Thank you to the many volunteers who have donated food, time, fresh produce, boxes, supplies, financial support and encouragement to the board throughout the past year.
Thank you to the individuals, youth and adult groups, businesses and farmers who have contributed to the food shelf during the past year.
HTFS is located at 909 Winnebago Ave. in Fairmont. We are open to the public 5-7 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays and from 9-11 a.m. Saturdays. The phone number is (507) 238-5424.
