Fairmont golfers sweep mixed SCC triangular

FAIRMONT – Fairmont’s Lizzie Larson and Josh Baldus proved double medalist winners during rare mixed South Central Conference golf meets with St. Peter and Waseca on Tuesday in Fairmont.

Larson carded a nine-hole score of 44 to claim top individual honors in guiding the Cardinals to a 191-212 victory over Waseca during nine-hole action at Interlaken Golf Course.

Larson then proceeded to play the back nine in an 18-hole meet against St. Peter, penciling in a 48 for a medalist mark of 92 to pace Fairmont’s winning team total of 385 and lock up the regular-season dual-meet championship with a 5-0 mark. The Saints, however, were incomplete in the team portion of the meet as half of their golfers withdrew due to the 101-degree heat.

Larson produced a team-leading six pars through 18 holes, while Megan Rosol and Elizabeth Kim each connected for four pars en route to a 49-46-95 and 47-48-95, respectively, for the Cardinals. Emily Kim rounded out the counting marks by firing a 51-52-103.

Cassidy Krusemark (117) and Alyssa Westcott (139) rounded out Fairmont’s winning performance.

In the boys’ competition across town at Rose Lake Golf Course, Baldus penciled in a 40 to merit medalist honors in guiding Fairmont to a 177-184 conference victory over Waseca.

Baldus then generated a 44 to complete his 18-hole round for another medalist mark of 84 to lift the Cardinals to a 359-363 league triumph over St. Peter.

Baldus generated six pars and one birdie to pace his winning score of 40-44-84, while Carter Welchlin, Cole Huinker and Joe Nordquist completed the Cardinals’ counting marks. Welchlin fired a 46-41-87 on the strength of a team-leading nine pars to complement one birdie, while Huinker shot a 48-45-93 behind four pars. Nordquist chipped in a 46-49-95 by making three pars on the day.

Sam Havnen supplied a 47-51-98 via one birdie and two pars for the Cardinals, while Derrick Hohensee chipped in a 45-53-98, highlighted by one par.

The Fairmont boys team competes in the Albert Lea Invitational on Friday, while the Fairmont girls lineup (26-2, 5-0 SCC) returns to action at 9 a.m. Monday at the SCC Meet at Shoreland Country Club in St. Peter.
