No. 6 Luverne serves loss to FHS

LUVERNE – Sterlin Johnson and Tyler Head combined court skills at No. 2 doubles to help Fairmont avert a shutout at the rackets of Class A, No. 6-ranked Luverne during non-league tennis action Saturday in Luverne.

Sterlin Johnson and Head outlasted Luverne’s Ethan Johnson and Zach Gillette in the opening set, 6-4, before the hometown Cardinals’ tandem rallied to claim the second segment, 6-2. Sterlin Johnson and Head, however, bounced back to reverse the score in their favor in the third set, 6-2, to capture the team point.

Fairmont’s first doubles team of J.T. Viesselman and Andrew Johnson battled Scott Nelson and Blake Ziegler to a three-set decision. Viesselman and Andrew Johnson won the opener, 6-2, before Nelson and Ziegler reeled off set decisions of 6-0 and 6-3 to net the team tally.

Hunter Robinson and Erik Wohnoutka teamed at third doubles to post a 6-0, 6-1 victory over Fairmont’s Austin Becker and Carter Klanderud.

The hometown Cardinals swept the singles bracket via straight-set decisions. Joey Vajgrt downed Grant Becker at the No. 1 spot in the lineup, 6-2, 7-5, before Jonny Vajgrt rolled to back-to-back 6-1 set wins over Ryan Busche at the No. 2 position.

Dustin Deutsch shut out Tony Joseph at No. 3 singles, while Andrew Jelken served a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Mitch Anderton at fourth singles.
