Crusaders slip past Mavericks
MANKATO – The Class A, No. 4-ranked Mankato Loyola Crusaders scratched out a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to stave off the Martin County West Mavericks, 6-5, during Valley Conference baseball action Friday at Franklin Rogers Park in Mankato.
Jake Faber went a perfect 4-for-4 to fuel the Mavericks’ 12-4 edge in the hitting department, but the Crusaders (9-1) combined four hits with four MCW errors to claim the one-run victory.
Shane Sellner went 2-for-3 with two RBIs to top Loyola’s offensive effort, while teammate Evan Ellingworth handled the home team’s pitching duties. Ellingworth gave up five runs on a dozen hits, struck out four and walked two in seven innings of work to net the victory.
Tony Payne went 3-for-4 for MCW, while Alex Biehn contributed a 2-for-4 performance.
Faber recorded two strikeouts and one walk in 6-plus innings on the mound to absorb the tough loss.
Martin County West (2-4, 2-2 Valley) plays host to Lyle/Austin Pacelli at 11 a.m. today at the Fox Lake Sports Complex in Welcome.

Martin Luther/GHEC/Truman 6-2, St. James 4-3 – The Knights rallied for four runs in the top of the fifth inning to capture the opener 6-4 before the hometown Saints bounced back for a 3-2, five-inning victory on Friday during nonconference doubleheader action in St. James.
Dylan Petrowiak produced two hits and two RBIs to pace the Knights in Game 1, Josh Wolter delivered two RBIs and one hit, Alex Weihe supplied an RBI single, while Sam Geistfeld scored two runs.
Petrowiak gave up four runs on seven hits, struck out one and walked one in 5 1/3 innings of relief to notch the win. Colton Greiner struck out two in 1 2/3 innings of work.
John Olsen generated three hits, one RBI and one run scored for St. James, while Zack Gleiter doubled in a pair of runs. Walker Froehling added two hits, including a double.
Sam Carlson gave up one run in one hitless inning on the mound, striking out one and walking one for the Saints.
Justin Stevens allowed five runs – four earned – on seven hits, fanned four and did not issue a walk in five frames of relief to take the loss for St. James.
Gleiter produced an RBI double, Ryan Menssen collected an RBI single and Froehling doubled to help the Saints edge the Knights, 3-2, in the nightcap.
Derrick Shupe gave up two runs on six hits and struck out two without issuing a walk in three innings of work to notch the win for St. James.
Froehling fanned five and allowed only one hit in two shutout innings of relief to earn the save.
Petrowiak drove in two runs with two hits to top ML/GHEC/Truman in Game 2, Trent Stensland singled and scored, while Tristan Maday added a hit.
Geistfeld allowed three runs on four hits, struck out one and walked two in three innings of work to take the loss for the Knights. Dustin DeBell worked one inning of scoreless relief.
Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman (7-4, 2-2 Valley) travels to Blue Earth Area on Monday for a 3:45 p.m. game.

Nicollet 14, Martin County West 11 – Courtney Struss erupted for a game-best five hits, including a pair of doubles, to produce four RBIs to help the Raiders outslug the Mavericks, 14-11, during Valley Conference softball action on Friday in Nicollet.
Bailey Tish and Kate Thiesse each produced three RBIs via two hits for MCW, with Thiesse pounding out a double.
Rebecca Steen collected three hits, including a triple, to drive in one run for the Mavericks; Molly Klima generated two hits; while Tayler Hagen added an RBI single.
Steen gave up nine runs on 10 hits, struck out three and walked four in five innings to receive no decision.
Morgan Williamson allowed three runs and walked four in 1/3 of an inning of relief to take the loss. Jordan Gregory gave up two runs on one hit and walked two in closing the final 2/3s of an inning.
Sarah Meurer allowed six runs on nine hits in six innings of relief to net the win for Nicollet. Emily Fischer started and gave up five runs on three hits, walked two and struck out one in one frame.
