Cardinals sweep SCC twinbill from St. James

ST. JAMES – The Fairmont Cardinals’ batting order erupted for 22 hits to trigger a doubleheader sweep over the St. James Saints, 5-1 and 9-4, during South Central Conference softball action Tuesday in St. James.

Micaela Gochanour went 3-for-4 with one RBI to help engineer the Cardinals’ 5-1 victory in the opener.

Kristen Campe doubled twice in three at-bats to generate two RBIs for Fairmont, while teammate Courtney Guetter went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Mikayla Krzywicki contributed a double to the Game 1 winning effort, while Allison Moeller chipped in an RBI triple.

Taylor Schultze allowed only one run on 11 hits, struck out two and did not issue a walk in seven innings of work to earn the complete-game victory for the Cardinals.

Emily Bottem went 3-for-3 to top the Saints, Lindzey Hanson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Kendahl Rogers was 2-for-3.

St. James starting pitcher Julia Beckius gave up five runs on nine hits, struck out four and walked four in six innings to take the loss.

Guetter went 2-for-4 with a double and drove in a game-best three runs to ignite the Cardinals’ 9-4 triumph in the nightcap.

Courtney Whitmore went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for Fairmont, Campe went 2-for-4 with a double and one RBI, Gochanour went 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Tieryn Arens added a pair of hits.

Krzywicki allowed four runs on five hits, struck out six and walked just one in seven innings of work to net the complete-game victory for the Cardinals in Game 2.

Beckius went 3-for-3 with two RBIs to pace the Saints in the nightcap.

Emily Bottem gave up nine runs – seven earned – on 13 hits, struck out five and walked one in seven innings to take the loss for St. James.

Fairmont (2-7, 2-4 SCC) plays host to Blue Earth Area in a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday at Cardinal Park.

Lisa Craig produced four hits and teammate Payton Walser singled, doubled and tripled to fuel Fairmont’s 21-3, five-inning victory over St. James during junior varsity action on Tuesday in St. James.

Abby Fitzgerald singled twice and tripled to add more offensive punch for the Cardinals, while Taylor Nuss doubled. Brice Bonin, Jess Koskovich, Katelynn Noah, Lindsee Tromanhauser and Marissa Krzywicki each added singles.

Allison Johnston gave up three runs on six hits, struck out six and walked two in five innings of work to earn the complete-game victory for Fairmont (3-5).

Martin County West 26, Martin Luther/GHEC 2 – Molly Klima generated a game-best six RBIs on the strength of a grand slam home run to stampede the Mavericks to a 26-2, five-inning Valley Conference victory over the Knights on Tuesday in Northrop.

Kate Thiesse went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for MCW, while Bailey Tish doubled twice and drove in three runs. Jordan Gregory went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs, while Kennedy Janssen went 2-for-2 on the game.

Gregory allowed two runs in tossing a no-hitter through three frames of work to earn the victory. Gregory struck out five and issued nine walks.

Knight starting pitcher Amber Schulz struck out two and walked 11 in two innings of work.

Martin County West (5-2, 3-2 Valley) plays host to Alden-Conger on Thursday in Welcome.

Martin Luther/Granada-Huntley-East Chain travels to St. Clair on Thursday for another conference game.

New Ulm 8, Blue Earth Area 0 – Starting pitcher Sydney Schuck and reliever Hannah Backer combined on a five-hit shutout to guide the Eagles to an 8-0 South Central Conference triumph over the Bucs on Tuesday in New Ulm.

Schuck struck out four and allowed two hits in two scoreless innings of work. Backer gave up three hits, fanned two and walked three in five frames of relief to net the victory.

Ellie Schneider went 2-for-2 with two RBIs for the Eagles, while Schuck was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Ashton Hendricksen and Chelsea Owen each produced two hits to top the Bucs’ offensive effort, while Kylie Ahl chipped in a hit.

Megan Wirtjes allowed eight runs on 11 hits, struck out three and walked four in six innings of work to receive the loss for BEA.

Blue Earth Area travels to Fairmont for a 4:30 p.m. doubleheader on Thursday.

New Ulm (10-1, 5-0 SCC) plays host to Waseca on Thursday.
