Cardinals deal loss to Bucs

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Cardinals boys tennis team bounced back from a loss to St. James on Monday to earn a 6-1 South Central Conference victory over the Blue Earth Area Bucs on Tuesday at Cardinal Courts in Fairmont.

Grant Becker, Tyler Head and Austin Becker each earned straight-set singles victories to give Fairmont a quick 3-0 lead in the dual meet.

Austin Becker started the Cardinals’ winning ways, shutting out Spencer Peterson at fourth singles. Grant Becker downed Hunter Myers, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles spot before Head replicated that feat at No. 3 singles, beating Jaron King, 6-0, 6-2.

“It was good to get Grant back on track after yesterday’s match, and Austin, Tyler and Grant played pretty well for us in singles today,” said Fairmont head coach Eric Johnson.

With one singles match left on the court, Fairmont swept the doubles bracket to clinch the conference victory.

Jake Kallenbach and Mitch Anderton combined for a third doubles win, downing Mason Hehr and Spenser Timmerman, 6-0, 6-1.

J.T. Viesselman and Andrew Johnson defeated Ben Gettis and Trenton Stindtman, 6-0, 3-6, 6-2, in the No. 1 double match, before Ryan Busche and Carter Klanderud outlasted the Bucs’ Martin Granados and Chandler Kienitz for a second doubles win.

Senior Eric Purvis took the lone Buc victory on the day, beating Sterlin Johnson, 3-6, 6-2, 7-5.

“I give Sterlin credit for coming back in the third set,” said Johnson. “But we learned some things today as a team after Monday’s match. We have to come out and execute, we can’t just come out and play and expect to win. We still need to execute.”

Fairmont (2-4, 2-2 SCC) hosts Chanhassen in a nonconference meet at 3:40 p.m. Friday in Fairmont. Blue Earth Area (0-8) travels to Worthington for a 4:30 p.m. nonconference meet Friday.
