Cardinal golfers sink ’Kato East
FAIRMONT – Fairmont senior Lizzie Larson recorded a team-best 44-43 87 round to help the Cardinals girls golf team to a 387-438 nonconference victory over the Mankato East Cougars on Friday at Interlaken Golf Club in Fairmont.
“Overall, I’m very happy with a team score of 387 today,” said Fairmont head coach Ron Kallheim. “Today was the second time we have been outside hitting balls this season. When you look at it, it’s like our second practice round, but with the weather it is happening in a meet.”
In just the second time this season that Fairmont has been out on a golf course, Larson carded six pars, with four coming on the first four holes of the course en route to her meet medalist performance.
“We had an 87 today and that is great. That score has the ability to make up for some of the other girls’ strokes and to have a score like that this early is very good,” said Kallheim.
Megan Rosol also scored below the century mark for Fairmont, with 48-47 for a 95. Rosol managed one par on the front nine, and finished out the round with a pair of pars on the par 4 No. 14 and par 5 No. 17 holes.
Elizabeth Kim and Emily Kim teamed up for finishes of 100 and 105, respectively, besting Thursday’s opening meet scores by nine and three strokes to complete the Cardinals’ counting scores.
“Emily coming back this season and shooting in the low 100’s is great. I think that by the end of the season, even though it is going to be short the Kim girls could bother be in the 90’s,” said Kallheim.
Cassidy Krusemark added a 55-62-117, with one par, while Alyssa Westcott contributed a 63-56-119 to the Cardinals effort.
Mankato East was led by Caylin Steinberg who shot a 102, and had three teammates score in the 112 for the Cougars.
Caitlin Clause, Emily Stengel and Molly Manning each carded 112’s for the Cougars’ remaining counting scores.
Alexis Just and Amanda Broman carded 116 and 119, respectively to round out the Mankato East effort.
Fairmont (2-0) will travel to St. Peter for a 2 p.m. invitational at Shoreland Country Club on Tuesday.
