Trojans squeeze by FHS in opener

WORTHINGTON – Paige Kinley’s go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the third inning proved the eventual difference as the Worthington Trojans edged the Fairmont Cardinals, 3-2, during season-opening softball action on Friday in Worthington.

Kaylee Sauck drew an RBI bases-loaded walk to stake Fairmont to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning before Worthington responded with a solo run during the home half of the second and two more runs in the third.

Aly Eversman, who went 2-for-4 to top the Cardinals’ six-hit performance, delivered an RBI single in the top of the seventh to trim the Trojans’ lead to 3-2.

Worthington starting pitcher Sarah Ebbers, however, managed to work out of the late-inning jam to earn the complete-game victory. Ebbers gave up two runs on six hits, struck out three and issued seven walks in seven innings.

Tieryn Arens delivered a double, while Courtney Whitmore and Allison Moeller each singled and scored a run for the Cardinals. Kristen Campe added a hit for Fairmont.

Betsy Thompson went 2-for-3 with an RBI double for Worthington, Rebecca Linder belted a solo home run, while teammate Kara Honius chipped in a run-scoring double.

Cardinal starting hurler Mikayla Krzywicki allowed three runs on five hits, fanned four and walked one in going the six-inning distance.

Fairmont (0-1) hosts St. James on Tuesday.

Kaitlin Korn singled and scored the game-winning run on a passed ball to propel Fairmont to a 10-9 victory over Worthington during junior varsity action on Friday in Worthington.

Lisa Craig singled and doubled to top the Cardinals’ offense, while teammates Brice Bonin, Brooklyn Healey and Courtney Mosloski contributed singles to the winning effort.

Allison Johnston pitched five innings to earn the victory for Fairmont (1-0).
