Art show offering outreach

FAIRMONT – As a continuing effort to reach out to young adults in the area, the Christian ministry “The Gathering” is hosting “Generation Now,” an art show at Red Rock Center for the Arts tonight and Saturday.

The show is open to the public, featuring local young adult artists.

“We have photography, drawing, painting, music, sculptures, woodwork and clothwork,” said Bart Whitman of The Gathering.

Whitman launched the ministry this past fall. It is something he has worked toward for the past two years.

“The primary purpose of The Gathering is to bring awareness to young adults in this community,” he said. “The highlights of this age group is that there is a high level of creativity; they have a real passion for creating and artistic things. We thought this was a good opportunity to show off those abilities to the community.”

The show opens at 6 p.m. tonight at Red Rock Center and goes until 9 p.m. Saturday’s showing will be from 3-9 p.m. There will be live music for portions of the show both nights. A Gathering service will be held at 6:30 p.m. during the show Saturday.

Whitman said his hopes for the show go beyond art.

“We also want to raise awareness in the community of the significant number of younger adults in and around Fairmont. They have specific needs and struggles, and it is our hope that the community can come together to encourage and support the younger generation.”

While also helping young adults find support and maintain their faith, The Gathering hopes to help give back to the community.

“Our vision is to open a coffee shop, because it would be a benefit to the community at large,” Whitman said. “We’ve almost completed a business model, and there is the potential for the young adult population to expand. We figure if we break even, that would be OK, because our goal is to provide something that’s beneficial to the community.”
