Melvin Dallas Rasmussen
SHERBURN – Mass of Christian burial for Melvin Dallas Rasmussen, 95, of Sherburn, formerly of Alpha, Minn., will be 10:30 a.m. today, March 8, 2013, at Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson, with Father Brian Sutton and Father Charles J. Quinn officiating. Burial with military honors will follow immediately in the Good Shepherd Cemetery in Jackson.
Melvin passed away Monday, March 4, 2013, at his residence in Sherburn.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service today at the church.
Melvin Dallas Rasmussen was born April 30, 1917, on the family farm in Petersburg Township, Jackson County, Minn., the son of Rasmus and Mamie (Ritter) Rasmussen. He graduated from Petersburg High School. On Nov. 20, 1941, he was united in marriage to Marie McGowan at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Trimont, Minn. He had owned Shorty’s Standard Station in Petersburg from 1940 to 1960. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II and served in the South Pacific. He had also operated the family farm that had been in the family now for over 120 years. He also drove school bus for the Petersburg School District and worked for DeKalb. Melvin also became the Jackson County Veterans Service officer from 1968 to 1988. Melvin and Marie moved to the Temperance Ridge Assisted Living Home in Sherburn, where he passed away on Monday, March 4, 2013, at the age of 95 years, 10 months and 5 days. Melvin was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd in Jackson. He was active with the American Legion and VFW Posts in Jackson and helped support the welfare of all veterans. Melvin and Marie loved to fish in Pierre, S.D., and Canada and in their retirement they traveled extensively. He loved to dance, especially at the Fox Lake Ballroom, where he had met Marie, and continued to dance until just a few years ago.
Melvin is survived by his wife of 71 years, Marie Rasmussen of Sherburn; two sons, Donald (Diane) Rasmussen of Long Prairie, Minn., and Patrick (Connie) Rasmussen of Owatonna, Minn.; three grandchildren, Dawn (Greg) Rasmussen-Graves of Long Prairie, Drew (Brenda) Rasmussen of Little Falls, and Katie Rasmussen of Minneapolis; seven great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Melvin was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Michael; a brother, Lester Rasmussen, and a sister, Stella Soucek.
