Mall hosting popular Expo

FAIRMONT – The end of winter is in site this weekend, as the KSUM-KFMC Spring Expo takes over Five Lakes Centre.

While the size of the Expo has remained steady since it began in 2003, it may seem more full.

“We have a few new vendors here, but there is a little less room because of the new stores [at the mall] and some moving,” said Vicki Bicknase, coordinator for the event. “There are always changes, but we just try to work with everyone, and it’s great for them to get some businesses in here.”

None of this hampers the spirit of the show or its vendors.

“We put this all together for the community and the vendors to help them see what’s new out there,” Bicknase said. “We have an absolutely great turnout every year. Our vendors always tell us how good it is.”

Beginning at noon today, about 75 regional vendors, ranging from home improvements to recreation, will be on hand. But the setup for the Spring Expo has been in the works all week.

“We’ve been out here every day since Monday,” Bicknase said. “The maintenance workers at Five Lakes Centre do a wonderful job on helping us set up. The vendors started coming in on Thursday and will be setting up until noon [today].”

While many vendors are “regulars” on the home show circuit this time of year, for others the Spring Expo is enough exposure to last throughout the year.

“A lot of the contractors and home improvement vendors get jobs for the season from here, and for some, the jobs they get here fill up their whole summer,” Bicknase said. “When doing advertising, our job is to invite people in, the vendors invite people in, and that’s how our businesses here grow.”

There is no admission charge for the Expo, which runs from noon to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
