GHEC splits two with SESM

EAST CHAIN – Rachel Shumski generated a double-double effort of 16 points and 10 rebounds to help lead the Granada-Huntley-East Chain Mustangs to a 61-51 nonconference hoops victory over the Sleepy Eye/St. Mary’s Knights on Friday at East Chain School.

Amanda Cegelske poured in 12 points to go along with seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks to add to the Mustangs’ winning effort.

Anna Balcom tallied 11 points, grabbed six boards and distributed six assists, Alex Stennes scored eight points, while Rachael Sauck pocketed five steals for GHEC.

Maddy Helget scored 25 points to lead Knights’ offensive efforts, that included going 12 of 19 from the free throw line.

The Mustangs went 23 of 56 shooting from the floor, while going 11-for-23 from the charity stripe.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (16-7) hosts Southwest Star in a Section 2A, South Sub-Section quarterfinal game at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in East Chain.

Boys Basketball

Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s 68, Granada-Huntley-East Chain 55 – The visiting Knights outscored the Mustangs by a 38-14 margin during the second half to exit East Chain School with a 13-point nonconference victory on Friday night.

Ryan Shumski produced a double-double performance of 20 points and 10 rebounds to top GHEC’s effort.

Trent Stensland neared double-double territory by netting 17 points to complement eight boards for the Mustangs.

Konnor Kristenson produced seven points, eight rebounds and four steals for GHEC, while teammate Jared Green distributed four assists.

The Mustangs made 14 of 35 shots from 2-point range, 6 of 18 behind the arc and 9 of 18 at the free throw line.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (7-15) travels to St. James on Monday for a nonconference game.
