Spirit Lake cagers end North Union’s season

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa – Spirit Lake utilized a 21-2 scoring surge that bridged the third and fourth quarters to down North Union, 47-30, during Iowa Class 2A boys basketball playoff action Monday night in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Spirit Lake (15-7) advances to face Okoboji, Milford in the District 2 semifinals at 7 p.m. Thursday night at a site to be determined. Okoboji, Milford reached the next round by eliminating Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn, 58-55.

North Union ended its season with a 4-19 overall record.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, Shane Mills’ baseline basket midway through the third quarter staked the visitors to their last lead of the postseason clash at 26-24.

Alex Pringnitz, who co-led the host Indians with Alec Henrickson by scoring 16 points each, delivered six points during Spirit Lake’s 7-0 run to close out the third quarter with a 31-26 edge.

Aric Runge then hit a jumper to open the fourth frame to momentarily interrupt the Indians’ offensive outburst to draw the Warriors within 31-28.

Pringnitz, however, countered by draining the last of his three 3-pointers on the night to ignite Spirit Lake’s ensuing 14-0 run.

Paul Brown then garnered one of his game-best four steals on the game, drove the distance and hit the layup for two of his 10 points.

Henrickson then put the game out of reach by nailing one of his two 3-pointers before converting a traditional 3-point play to widen the gap to 42-28 with 4 minutes remaining in regulation.

Jacob Braddock sank a pair of free throws to finally end the Warriors’ scoring drought at 45-30.

North Union only trailed by one point after both the first quarter – 8-7 – and at halftime – 18-17.

Mills finished with 10 points to top the Warriors, teammate Colton McConnell contributed eight points, while Braddock netted six points.

The Warriors made 11 of 21 shots from 2-point range, 2 of 14 behind the 3-point arc and just 2 of 6 at the free throw line.
