Cardinals eliminate Trojans
FAIRMONT – Fairmont Area eighth-grader Taylor Nuss scored four goals, including one on a power play, to help lead the Cardinal girls hockey team to a 10-2 Section 3A quarterfinal victory over the Worthington Trojans on Friday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.
No. 3-seeded Fairmont Area (7-12) advances to play No. 2-seeded Luverne at 7 p.m. Tuesday in a sectional semifinal game. Luverne netted a first-round bye.
Worthington ended its season at 1-17-1 overall.
“I thought that this was a good tune-up to help us prepare ourselves for Tuesday’s game against Luverne,” said Fairmont Area head coach Scott Kuhl.
The Trojans jumped out to a 1-0 lead with 1:55 remaining in the first period when Betsy Thompson jammed a muffled Allison Kremer shot under Cardinal netminder Sadie Sandersfeld’s covering glove.
Fairmont Area responded with three goals in the final 63 seconds to erase the visitor’s lead, taking a two-goal lead into the first intermission.
Brooke Lemon started off the Cardinals’ three-goal scoring spree.
Myah Lytle fired a wrister at the Trojan goal and after Worthington goalie Amanda Bristow turned the shot away for one of her 47 saves on the game.
Lemon, who was camped out by the goal post, quickly sent the rebound into the netting to even the game at 1-1 with 1:03 left on the clock in the first.
Nuss flipped home a goal for the first of her four tallies with 32 seconds remaining in the period to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
Jalyssa Wilson joined the scoring action with just 10 seconds left on the clock, sending a Logyn Cone pass through the crease for the two-goal lead.
“We couldn’t quite get our legs under us early in the first period,” said Kuhl. “Then they scored that first goal and it’s like that woke us up and we scored those three goals in almost a minute.”
The scoring continued for the Cardinals in the second period, with the home team lighting the lamp four times to take a six-goal lead.
Tieryn Arens created the first scoring opportunity, picking up the loose puck at the Trojan blue line and carrying it through neutral ice into the Cardinal zone. Arens’ blast from the slot on Bristow’s glove side snapped the net to take a 4-1 lead at 2:46 in the second.
Nuss ripped off a blast for her second goal of the game, sending a Cone and Abby Rahm assist over Bristow’s shoulder with just under 12 minutes left in the middle frame.
Lemon sent home her second goal of the night 56 seconds later on a Lytle assist, before Nuss completed the hat trick with her third goal.
Nuss completed the hat trick via an unassisted goal, flipping a backhander up and over Bristow’s glove to make it 7-1 after two periods.
The Trojans managed their second goal of the game in the third period with Kremer stuffing a shot under Sandersfeld’s glove for the score to make it 7-2 just 57 seconds into the final frame.
Wilson scored her second goal off a Lemon and Abby Rahm assist with 9:47 left in the game, before Nuss managed her fourth goal on an Abby Rahm and Katie Hohensee assist with just under three minutes remaining.
Cone also joined in on the scoring parade, sliding a shot just to the left of Bristow for the Cardinals’ the 10th goal of the playoff game.
Fairmont Area fired 57 shots on goal, while the Trojans recorded 18 shots on net.
“If we can get 50 shots on Luverne’s goalie, hopefully we can make it interesting,” said Kuhl. “It’s no small task to go into Luverne and beat them – they are the No. 2 seed. But we’ll give it all we’ve got.”
