Jayhawks garner 1 win in quad

TRUMAN – The Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther Jayhawks won one of three dual meets in wrestling action on Tuesday in Truman.

After losing 36-30 to Maple River in a make-up Valley Conference dual, the Jayhawks traded a pair of victories during triangular wrestling action, defeating Mankato East 42-32 and falling 60-16 to Class A, No. 6-ranked Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.

Freshman Cole Pietsch and seventh-grader Jeremiah Colon opened up the dual against the Cougars with back-to-back wins to take the early lead for the Jayhawks.

Pietsch battled through the first period of the 106-pound match against Mankato East’s Eric Jaster before claiming the pin with five seconds remaining in the second period.

Colon on the other hand, came back from a 6-0 deficit at 113 to earn an 11-10 decision. The Cougars’ Walker Pearson nearly pinned Colon in the opening period, taking a 6-0 lead.

Colon responded in the second, scoring five quick points, and nearly pinning Pearson. Pearson then spun out of Colon’s grasp and reversed, taking an 8-5 lead.

Colon escaped and traded takedowns with Pearson before nearly pinning him twice for 5 back points to take the 11-10 lead after two periods. Colon held on in the final period, to claim the win.

“We had a lot of inexperience at the beginning of the season, but now that it is getting closer to the end you can see the improvement and see how their experience has helped,” said Madelia/Truman/Martin Luther head coach Darren Gifferson.

The Jayhawk upperclassmen were able to secure the dual meet win from there.

Senior Isaac Pfeffer recorded a major decision victory at 126 over the Cougars’ Michael Miller, winning 12-4. Junior Justin Gifferson claimed a win by forfeit for the Jayhawks at 132, while Class A, No. 1-ranked 160-pounder senior Adam Cooling claimed a win by forfeit at 160.

Walters jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the early part of the second period, Gifferson rolled out of the Eagles’ grasp for a reversal and nearly pinned the Walters for three back points to even the score at 6-6 going into the third.

Gifferson got Walters on his back again in the final period, and held him down for another three back points to take the win putting the Jayhawks within three points in the team scoring.

Again the Eagles responded, winning two of the final four matches to claim the 36-30 win.

“I thought we brough a lot of intensity to the mat tonight, especially towards the end of the duals,” said Darren Gifferson. “Maple River is a good team though, and I was pleasently surprised at how close we finished to them.”
