Waseca ices Fairmont Area

FAIRMONT – Twin siblings Taryn Juberien and Taylor Juberien, along with sisters Alicia Knoll and Maddy Knoll, proved double trouble for the Fairmont Area girls hockey team on Tuesday night.

Center Taryn Juberien generated a hat trick, forward Maddy Knoll netted two goals and one assist, defender Alicia Knoll tallied one goal and two assists, while netminder Taylor Juberien made 14 saves to pace the Waseca Bluejays’ 8-1 victory over the Cardinals at Martin County Arena.

“We got the job done tonight,” said Waseca mentor Kyle Collins, whose lineup nearly outshot Fairmont Area by a 3-to-1 margin – 41-15 – to create running time during the third period.

Brittany Miller’s backhand tap-in off of teammate Mackenzie Jorgenson’s deflected initial shot on goal literally broke the ice for the Bluejays at the 9:54 juncture of the opening period before Taryn Juberien made her stick-handling presence felt.

Taryn Juberien, who took the ice with a team-leading 31 goals and 17 assists to her credit through 20 games, flipped a wrister between Fairmont Area goaltender Miranda O’Connor and the left pipe after cleaning up Olivia McIntosh’s deflected carom. Maddy Knoll also received an assist on Juberien’s goal that staked Waseca to a 2-0 lead with 6:33 left in the first frame.

Maddy Knoll then displayed her incredible sense of balance to open the second segment by spinning to avoid a pursuing defender. The Waseca freshman forward then made a 90-degree reverse spin and flung a backhanded shot into the right top shelf at the 14:46 mark.

Fairmont Area senior Abby Rahm then spoiled Taylor Juberien’s bid for a shutout by firing an ice-hugging liner from the right wing that beat the Waseca netminder to her left. Logyn Cone and Kelsy Junkermeier were credited with assists on the goal at the 14:08 mark.

It only took three and a half minutes for Taryn Juberien and Maddy Knoll to combine for three consecutive goals to extend the Bluejays’ lead to 6-1.

Taryn Juberien converted Brittany Miller’s perfect centering pass from the right wing to fire a wrister inside the left post for her second goal of the game at 10:29.

Maddy Knoll and Taryn Juberien then delivered back-to-back cross-over maneuvers to juke their way to goals. Knoll’s second goal of the game was unassisted at the 6:35 mark, while Juberien’s fake-and-flip goal off an Alicia Knoll feed lit the lamp at 3:29.

Katelyn Miller capped Waseca’s five-goal second period by unleashing a left-wing slapshot from the blue line that zipped over O’Connor’s left shoulder and into the top shelf with only 2 seconds left in the middle segment.

Alicia Knoll then smacked home an assist from McIntosh with 17 seconds remaining in regulation to ice the Bluejays’ 8-1 victory.

O’Connor made 33 saves for the Cardinals.

Fairmont Area’s Brooke Lemon, Jalyssa Wilson, Taylor Nuss and Tieryn Arens each unleashed blasts from near the point during the second period, but Taylor Juberien proved worthy of the challenge by denying all four hard-struck liners.

Fairmont Area (6-12, 0-6 SCC) awaits the outcome of today’s Section 3A seeding meeting for its playoff opponent and location of the game. The Cardinals will likely play host to a 7 p.m. sectional quarterfinal game on Friday, Feb. 8, at Martin County Arena.

Waseca (13-8, 4-1 SCC) travels to New Ulm on Friday for its regular-season finale.
