Red Bulls fall to LCWM, MR
FAIRMONT – The Class A, No. 6-ranked Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial Knights swept a Valley Conference triangular, beating the Maple River Eagles 49-6 before downing the Fairmont/Martin County West Red Bulls 44-24 on Tuesday in Fairmont.
“Both the teams we faced tonight were good teams with some great individuals,” said Fairmont/Martin County West head coach Jake Tietje. “Even though we lost both, we were right in the meet with Maple River and did a good job against Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial.”
The 2012 Class A state consolation champion Knights jumped out to a 14-0 lead against the Red Bulls behind an 11-3 major decision victory by Brandon Laborde over Collin Steuber at 106 pounds and Caleb Davis’ fall over Chris Ettesvold in 37 seconds at 113.
That pitted Class A, No. 2-ranked 120-pounder Louie Sanders against Class AA, No. 1-ranked 106-pounder Trevor Schultz at 120. Sanders took a 2-1 lead after the opening period as the pair locked limbs before extending his lead to 7-1 in the second period. The sophomore, who finished fifth in the Class A state meet at 113 last year, held on for the 9-1 major decision victory over Schultz.
Elijah Gronewold was able to get the Red Bulls on the board in his match. Gronewold trailed the Knights’ Jadon Grommersch 9-5 in the final minute of the third period of the 126-pound match. With 15 seconds left, Gronewold took down Grommersch and rolled through for the pin in 5:49.
Taner Trembley, the defending Class A 132-pound state champion, demonstrated why he still tops the Class A rankings for the Knights with a pin of Tanner Lange in 3:19 in the 145-pound match.
Red Bulls’ Class AA, No. 9-ranked 152-pounder Joe Weber made quick work of his second victory of the night, pinning Matt Sheetz in 1:45 seconds. Weber was one of three Red Bulls, including Luis Figeuroa and Colton Hines, to win both matches in the triangular.
In the dual with the Eagles, Weber won by forfeit in the 152-pound match.
Kory Brown grabbed one of three Red Bull victories to close out the match. Brown faced the Knights’ Shane Nelson and attacked early and often in their 195-pound match.
After Brown took the first points with a takedown, Brown took another shot and earned the pin just 38 seconds into the match.
“I think that Kory has been wrestling well the last few weeks, but tonight he came out in his second match and had a lot more fire than he has lately,” said Tietje. “It really showed, he attacked as he was able to get a really nice win for us.”
Figueroa fought back from a 3-1 deficit in the third period of the 220-pound match to take another victory for Fairmont/Martin County West over Lucas Gens. The Knights’ senior and the Red Bulls freshman battled to a 1-1 tie in the early stages of the third period, but with 35 seconds left, Gens had taken a two-point lead with a takedown.
As the seconds elapsed, Figueroa made an escape, spinning out of Gens’ grasp and went on the offensive. With 11 seconds remaining, Figueroa drove Gens to the mat for two points and the one-point victory.
“I thought that Elijah and Figueroa did a good job of finishing those matches off for us,” said Tietje. “For a sophomore and a freshman to go out and beat a pair of seniors, that is big. And it’s what we always talk about, finishing off the matches strong. They did and both got great wins.”
Figueroa pinned Maple River’s Luke Krengel at 1:19 for his first victory of the night.
Hines, the Class AA, No. 3-ranked 285-pounder, finishedthe meet with a flurry, taking an 11-4 victory over Nick Meixel for his second win of the night.
The top-ranked senior hadn’t wrestled a match in the last two duals due to forfeits, and was on the offensive early during his victory over the Knights.
Three times Hines drove Meixel to the floor, allowing him to escape twice to take a 6-2 lead after the first period. That lead would continue to grow as Hines eventually took the seven-point win.
“It was great for Colton to get finally get a chance to wrestle and see some action,” said Tietje. “He wrestled tough and had a lot of fire in his wrestling tonight which was good to see.”
In the earlier meet against the Eagles, Hines won by forfeit.
Along with Weber, Hines and Figueroa’s victories against the Eagles, the Red Bulls claimed a pair of match victories to stay within striking distance of Maple River, falling 37-30.
“Losing the Maple River dual was a bit of a heartbreaker. We were right in it at the halfway point, but our best guys weren’t given the chance to wrestle, so that’s tough,” said Tietje.
Chris Ettesvold claimed the first match victory for the Red Bulls, pinning the Eagles’ Prince Bade 50 seconds at 113 to give the home team a 6-3 lead.
Bade scored first, taking Ettesvold down for two, but on a quick reversal, Ettesvold pulled Bade around and pressed his shoulders to the mat for the win.
Schultz then claimed victory at 120 with a forfeit to extend the Red Bulls’ lead to 12-3.
Class A, No. 5-ranked 113-pounder Zack Kuhns delivered a quick pin of Levi Bulfer at 126 pounds, winning in 3:13 to get Maple River back within striking distance.
A trio of Eagle victories following the Kuhns win gave Maple River an 18-12 lead at the midway point of the dual. Class A, No. 5-ranked 145-pounder Aaron Trio capped off the Eagles short win streak with a 6-1 decision over Tanner Lange in the 145-pound match to earn the 100th victory of his prep career.
Trio held Lange scoreless after the first period, taking a 2-0 lead into the middle frame. After getting Lange to the mat, Trio nearly pinned the sophomore, but Lange escaped to score his lone point of the match.
Weber’s forfeit victory at 152 tied the meet at 18-18, but four straight victories by the Eagles sealed the conference dual victory.
Fairmont/Martin County West wrestles at 5 p.m. in Worthington on Friday.
