Thiesse hits GW for MCW vs. A-C

TRIMONT – Martin County West junior forward Kate Thiesse sank a jump shot in the lane with seven seconds remaining in regulation to propel the Mavericks to a key 55-53 Valley Conference basketball win over the Alden-Conger Knights on Tuesday night in Trimont.

The Knights were 7-0 against league opponents entering the conference clash, while the Mavericks were 7-1 against Valley foes.

Thiesse scored 12 points, including the game-winner, and made three steals for MCW.

Taryn Tumbleson also scored in double digits, netting a team-best 18 points to go along with seven steals for the Mavericks.

Reilly Geistfeld led the rebounding effort with 12 of the Mavericks’ 31 boards in the win.

Martin County West made 23 of 67 shots from the floor, and went 6-for-15 from the charity stripe.

Taylor Martin scored a game-high 24 points to pace the Knights’ offensive efforts, while Karina Skov and Brittany Waters each recorded 11 points.

The Knights made 10 of 19 free throws and pulled down 30 rebounds in the game.

Martin County West (12-2, 8-1 Valley) travels to Cleveland for a 7:30 p.m. conference game on Thursday.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain 44, North Union 29 – Rachel Shumski scored 17 points and pulled down five rebounds to help the Mustangs cruise to a 44-29 non-league victory over the Warriors on Tuesday night at East Chain School.

Anna Balcom scored 11 points to add to the Mustangs’ 18 of 50 shooting effort.

Amanda Cegelske doled out four assists, made four steals and grabbed six boards for GHEC, while teammate Mariah Jensen pulled down five rebounds and made four steals.

The Mustangs went 9-for-14 from the charity stripe on the game.

Sarah Rolling tallied eight points and grabbed six rebounds for North Union, while Cheyanne Boland and Dena Looft each scored six points.

Looft and Madison Bollig each garnered five rebounds, while Jasmine Clausen distributed four assists and made three steals for the Warriors.

North Union went 4-for-15 from behind the 3-point arc and made just 8 of 32 from 2-point range.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (6-6) hosts Maple River on Thursday night at East Chain School.

Martin Luther 56, Maple River 33 – Hunter Payne and Catie Sherman each turned in double-figure scoring clips to guide the Knights to a 56-33 Valley Conference victory over the Eagles on Tuesday night in Northrop.

Payne tallied a game-high 14 points to go along with six rebounds and three assists, while Sherman netted 11 points, five rebounds and four assists to the triumph.

Kayley Shoen made six steals and scored nine points for Martin Luther.

The Knights made 16 of 48 shots inside the arc, while hitting 3 of 6 from 3-point range.

Amber Schulz grabbed nine boards for the Knights, who sank 15 of 26 free throws in the game.

Jozie Ostermann tallied a team-high 10 points for the Eagles, while Emily Spear scored six points.

Martin Luther (8-5, 5-3 Valley) travels to Alden on Thursday for a conference game against Alden-Conger.

Truman/Martin Luther 51, Madelia 39 – Sam Geistfeld recorded a double-double performance of 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the BluejayKnights to a 51-39 Valley Conference victory over the Blackhawks on Tuesday in Truman.

Cade Ekstrom scored nine points and made four steals to go with three assists for TML.

The BluejayKnights made 21 of 52 from the floor and sank 8 of 12 free throws.

Madelia shot 14 of 49 from the floor and went 5-for-11 from the charity stripe.

Truman/Martin Luther (7-6, 3-3 Valley) travels to Cleveland on Friday night, while Madelia (2-9, 1-6 Valley) hosts St. Clair.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain 54, North Union 48 – Konnor Kristenson recorded a double-double effort of 10 points and 13 rebounds to help pace the Mustangs to a 54-48 non-league victory over the Warriors on Tuesday night at East Chain School.

Ryan Shumski scored a game-high 17 points to lead the Mustangs, while pulling down six boards.

Josh Johanson also scored in double figures, tallying 12 points for GHEC, Logan Pytleski pulled down six boards, while Trent Stensland doled out five assists.

The Mustangs made 17 of 31 shots from 2-point distance, 3 of 12 from 3-point range and 11 of 27 at the free throw line.

Shane Mills scored a team-high 16 points, grabbed five boards and made three steals to lead the Warriors.

Colton McConnell poured in 14 points and pulled down four caroms, while Alex Krantz tallied eight points to aid the 17-for-45 shooting effort.

The Warriors shot 50 percent from the free throw line, making 9 of 18 shots.

Matt Adams made three steals for the Warriors, while grabbing five boards.

Blue Earth Area 71, LeSueur-Henderson 68 – Dallas Barslou exploded for a game-high 24 points and Steven Plocker had a double-double of 13 points and 11 rebounds to pace the Bucs to a 71-68 nonconference victory over the Giants on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

Colin Squiers and Brandyn Olsen chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively, while Olsen added six rebounds for the Bucs.

Blue Earth Area went a perfect 14-for14 from the free throw line, and made 24 of 51 shots from the floor in the three-point victory.

Cody Wirt scored 16 points and Ty O’Brien tallied 15 to lead the Giants’ 21 of 40 shooting effort.

O’Brien also had six rebounds in the game.

Blue Earth Area (5-4, 1-2 South Central) hosts Fairmont in a 7:30 p.m. conference game on Friday.
