Mavs split pair with Luverne

LUVERNE – Kate Thiesse scored 21 points and Madyson Larson recorded a double-double outing of 12 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Martin County West Mavericks girls basketball team to a 60-42 nonconference victory over the Luverne Cardinals on Saturday in Luverne.

Thiesse and Larson fueled a 54 percent offensive outing, with the Mavericks making 24 of 44 shots from the floor.

Martin County West also shot over 50 percent from the charity stripe, sinking 12 of 23 free throw attempts.

Kaitlin Wohnoutka led Luverne’s scoring efforts with 21 points.

The Cardinals went 15-for-25 from the free throw line.

Martin County West (11-2, 7-1 Valley) hosts Alden-Conger – which is 7-0 in conference play – in a 7:30 p.m. league game on Tuesday night in Trimont.

Cedar Mountain/Comfrey 68, Truman 24 – The Cougars had four players in double digits to defeat the Bluejays 68-24 on Saturday in Comfrey.

Alli Madsen scored a game-high 18 points, while Courtney Nelsen scored 14 to lead the Cougars to the win. Andrea and Emily Ochs scored 11 and 10 points, respectively, to add to the Cougars’ offensive attack.

Brooke McDonald led the Bluejays with a near double-double performance of nine points and eight rebounds.

Briannia Pearson netted six points, Cleo Maloney pulled down six rebounds and Emily Zaharia grabbed five boards for Truman.

The Bluejays sank 7 of their 12 free throws, while the Cougars made 1 of 4 attempts.

Truman (1-13) travels to Northrop for a 7:30 p.m. Valley Conference game against Martin Luther today.

Boys Basketball

Luverne 65, Martin County West 58 – The Cardinals made twice as many free throws as the Mavericks attempted, to pace a 65-58 nonconference victory on Saturday in Luverne.

Brett Heronimus sank 10 of 11 charity tosses during the second half to pace a 20-point effort for Luverne, which made 18 of 28 from the line.

Matt Overgaard and Matt Arends contributed 17 and 16 points, respectively, to the Cardinals’ winning ways.

Austin Krumwiede neared 20-20 territory by pouring in a game-high 21 points to complement grabbing a game-best 18 rebounds for MCW.

Cordell Weber netted 15 points, while teammate Mitch Sitzmann distributed six assists for the Mavericks, which made only 4 of 9 free throws on the game.

Martin County West (10-3, 6-1 Valley) plays Granada-Huntley-East Chain on Friday night at East Chain School.

Luverne (8-4) travels to Edgerton tonight.

New Ulm 67, Blue Earth Area 65 – The Eagles had three guys in double figures to lead New Ulm to a 67-65 South Central Conference victory over the Bucs on Saturday in New Ulm.

Tyler Dittrich scored 12 points, while Chris Mulder and Sam Miller each tallied 11 to lead the Eagles offense.

The Bucs’ 16-for-29 shooting effort from inside the arc was led by Dallas Barslou’s 15-point performance. Derek Johnson scored 13 points, while Steven Plocker added 12 and Luke Monson netted 11 for the Bucs.

BEA sank 18 of 30 free throws and made 5 of 11 from behind the arc.

The Eagles went 27-for-51 shooting for 53 percent from the floor, while making 44 percent of their free throws.

Blue Earth Area (4-4, 1-2 SCC) hosts LeSueur-Henderson in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday in Blue Earth.

New Ulm (4-10, 2-2 SCC) plays host to Belle Plaine in a 7:30 p.m. nonconference game on Tuesday.

Konnor Kristenson scored 15 points, while Logan Pytleski netted 12 points to lead the Mustangs. Ryan Shumski tallied nine points in the effort.

Granada-Huntley-East Chain (3-7, 3-4 Valley) hosts North Union for a 7:45 p.m. game in East Chain.
