Krumwiede, Mavs stampede Bucs by 21
BLUE EARTH – The Martin County West Mavericks boys basketball team won its third game in four days, defeating Blue Earth Area 67-46 in nonconference action on Monday night in Blue Earth.
“We could use some practice. We played Thursday, Friday and today, so I hope it doesn’t show tonight,” Martin County West head coach Cliff Anderson said before the game.
Kyle Brolsma and Austin Krumwiede each scored 10 points in the first half to pace the Mavericks to a 43-23 halftime lead, showing no signs of a lack of practice.
Brandyn Olsen was the first to light up the scoreboard by sinking a 3-pointer from the wing to take the early 3-0 lead for the Bucs.
Krumwiede then spun inside the lane for a quick two and a foul sent him to the charity stripe for the 3-point play to tie the game.
Luke Monson then scored three of his game-high 18 points from the top of the key to take the Bucs’ second lead in the opening minutes.
Faber sank a 3 on the ensuing Maverick possession to tie the game again, and the visiting offense caught fire from there.
The Mavericks went on a 17-4 run for the next eight minutes, with the help of their zone defense and half-court trap.
“I thought our intensity in the first half was really good. We had balanced scoring and did what we needed to do,” said Anderson.
Krumwiede scored 10 of his team-leading 15 points in the first half and pulled down nine rebounds to lead the Mavericks in the game.
Brolsma contributed six of his eight rebounds and went 5-for-7 in his first-half offensive effort, on the way to a 12-point performance.
Cordell Weber added to MCW’s balanced attack with 11 points.
Monson tallied 10 of his 18 points in the second half, giving the Bucs an offensive spark.
“I thought we did a good job on Monson tonight on defense, then I saw he had 18 points. He’s a horse for them and played well,” said Anderson.
For the Bucs, baskets were hard to come by, making just 17 of 57 shots from the floor, including 4-for-15 from behind the arc. Martin County West, conversely, shot 48 percent from the floor, sinking 28 of 58 shots.
The Mavericks also were nearly perfect from the free throw line, making 6 of 7 shots.
